Master Electrician / Production Assistant
Reports to: Production Manager and Artistic Director
Status: Part-Time (average 20 hours/week; includes nights and weekends)
Compensation: $25,000 annual salary
Position Overview
Redhouse Arts Center seeks a versatile and skilled Master Electrician/Production Assistant to join our production team. This hybrid role combines technical leadership in lighting and sound with hands-on support across all production areas. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, solutions-oriented professional with a strong background in theatrical production and a commitment to supporting a wide range of artistic programming.
Key Responsibilities
As Master Electrician (ME):
- Oversee the implementation of lighting and sound designs for Redhouse productions, education programs, and rental events as needed.
- Execute all lighting and sound system installations, including hangs, focuses, strikes, and general maintenance.
- Maintain and inventory all lighting and sound equipment and supplies; manage repairs and replacements.
- Coordinate the purchase and organization of consumables (e.g., gels, gobos, gaffer tape, Sharpies).
- Plan and implement power distribution and circuiting for all lighting and audio equipment.
- Collaborate with designers to document system configurations, addressing, patching, and cueing.
- Program lighting control consoles based on designer paperwork and production needs.
- Design and manage repertory lighting plots for in-house events and outside groups as required.
- Coordinate the set-up and execution of video recording, projections, and streaming for in-house events and outside groups as required
- Train Stage Management to conduct daily pre-show light checks.
- Stay current with industry technology and safety standards, including ADA and OSHA compliance.
As Production Assistant (PA):
- Provide hands-on support in scenic construction, painting, props, and general production operations.
- Assist with load-ins, load-outs, strikes, and maintenance of production spaces.
- Help set up spaces for rehearsals, performances, and rentals.
- Participate in production meetings and collaborate with the full production team.
Qualifications
- Degree in Theater or related field, or equivalent professional experience (minimum 4 years).
- Proficient with theatrical lighting, sound, rigging, and related equipment.
- Working knowledge of lighting and audio control systems and software.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Excellent organizational, planning, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to safe working practices.
- Ability to lift and move heavy equipment; comfort working at heights.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Leadership experience and supervisory ability preferred.
- Technologically proficient; familiarity with drafting tools, QLab, and ETC systems a plus.
