MARIANNE SMITH DALTON

Artist's Statement
"How Does Your Garden Grow?"
Painting, for me, is a cathartic passion enabling me to remain rooted in both the past and present. The act of painting itself is linked to history and its struggle to survive in the ever-changing world of immediacy due to technology is an ever-present challenge. The physicality of oil paint in particular is paramount to my work because it blends and moves, transforming from a creamy paste into an image alive with color, form and texture. The tactile quality of each painting invites the viewer to ‘touch’ every inch of it, visually. The painted surface adds to its seductive, personal quality. The juxtaposition of computer-generated images and graphic elements highlight the sensual nature of the oil painted surface. I deliberately create a space that is flat and ambiguous by exploiting the strain between two and three dimensions. The collage components culminate in literal and/or figurative fragments of images, words and/or patterns.
My goal is to put a new twist upon the historic written and visual language of the past while utilizing elements of metaphor, icon, allegory, and satire to tell my stories. From Van der Weyden, Beardsley, and Warhol to the energy, emotion and color in urban graffiti art, inspiration surrounds me. Again, reaching into my past I draw upon phrases from my own childhood; nursery rhymes and familiar sayings carry new conceptual meaning while adding an element of whimsy. I am also intrigued with the conflicting image of woman portrayed throughout art history as both Eve and Mary, (seductress and angel) and the multiple ubiquitous symbols women represent: mother, earth, nature and humanity; and these are often interwoven throughout my visual palette. Each painting represents a story that unfolds from deep within my own consciousness, each relating to a memory, image or event that haunts and intrigues me.
